Additional Details

Antonio González de Paredes was for 23 years a soldier in the 3rd Company of the militia for Nuevo Santander province. Here at the age of 44, he requests his release from military service to retire in Laredo. His commander Ramón Díaz de Bustamante, in granting the request, recalls his effective service in actions against the Indians, killing one with a single shot: "se hayo a mis órdenes en la función del 14 de marzo de 1792 en la que se mataron 25 . . . y se portó con bizarría dando muerte a uno de ellos de un Balazo." Gonzáles also did well in the pursuit of Comanches who had raided the horses on Laredo: "Que el 29 de marzo de 1799 se halló a mis órdenes en la función que tuve con los Comanches en la que se portó bien" (see Smith, Dominance to Disappearance: The Indians of Texas and the Near Southwest, page 53, for more on this skirmish).
