Additional Details

The original document is a salary petition to President Iturbide by Lieutenant Colonel Juan Manuel Zambrano (1772-1824) of San Fernando de Béxar (now San Antonio, TX) for service in the Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras on 3 January 1822. Zambrano was an important Texan figure in the struggle for independence from Mexico, having participated in the 1810 Casas revolt. In 1822, the young Mexican government was short on funds and had difficulty paying its troops. Iturbide forwarded the petition on 11 January to Anastasio Bustamante, captain general of the Provincias Internas. Bustamante signed an additional note forwarding the request back to President Iturbide on 15 January, who signed again with his paraph on 17 January. A note from the treasury department is appended at the end, and on 26 January is a longer note bearing Iturbide's signature, ordering that Zambrano be paid 300 pesos in proportion to what was being paid to other officers: "entreguen trescientos pesos y sus pagas mientras permanesca en esta Capital, todo con la proporcion que se hace á los demas oficiales."
