Additional Details

A romantic depiction of Champ d'Asile, the failed colony of French exiles on the Trinity River. The settlers were led by devoted followers of Napoleon Bonaparte who hoped to some day restore him to the throne. Also among their number were Spaniards, Poles, and Americans. The pirate Jean Lafitte, then based in Galveston, was an ally. They built a fort near present-day Liberty in 1818 and were viewed as a military threat by the Spanish authorities, who drove them out before the end of the year. The caption translates as "Only Laurels Grow Here without Cultivation."
