Additional Details

This portrait of Davy Crockett was engraved just three years after his death at the Alamo. The original prints are extremely scarce. Mid-20th century restrikes are sometimes found on the market, but this impression is certainly earlier. It was found in a sealed frame by D.B. Butler & Co. of 601 Madison Avenue, New York; Butler was known to be at that address from at least 1915 to 1922, and had moved to a new location by 1925. A 1918 newspaper was found in the frame as backing. The repairs predate the framing, suggesting that the print is substantially older than circa 1918.
