Additional Details

The first Texas Congress was convened on 3 October 1836, and Sam Houston was elected president on 22 October. This newspaper reports on the First Congress and its meetings from 2 to 10 November, including their work on bounty lands for the lately successful army's soldiers, and a report from the Committee of Foreign Relations advocating a close alliance with the United States--or with Great Britain, if the United States "should turn a deaf ear." Also includes the text of President Houston's resolution, revoking the blockade of Matamoras. Among the advertisements is a long promotional piece for the City of Houston. Provenance: Christie's Jay T. Snider sale, 21 June 2005, lot 211.
