Additional Details

An advertisement for a public lottery, with the names of 15 prominent residents of Kaufman given as references. The American Agriculturist, at least, seemed to think this lottery was a scam, and noted that "the name of the secretary is Choate Somerby, which printed in fac-simile, looks at first sight most unfortunately like 'Cheat Somebody,'" (June 1875, page 211). Indeed, we find no record of anyone by that name in American history. The Massachusetts theatrical agent Rufus Choate Somerby might have been involved, though we find no record that he ever lived in Texas. No copies in WorldCat or at auction, though an inferior copy is held by Duke University. with--a smaller flier for the same lottery, five lottery tickets, and the original mailing envelope sent to a Virginia company.
