The samples are either small swatches or bits of thread, about 1/4 to 1/2 inches in length, in various shades of purple, black, gray, red, and orange, each with instructions. Koehler credits two recipes of the dye stuff dealers Andreykovicz & Dunk of 156 North 3rd Street; they operated at that address in 1866 and 1867. Laid in is a recipe from the same firm dated 1882, at a different address.
