Additional Details

This relic of the Jeannette was brought back from the Lena Delta by George Melville and gifted by him to the Geographical Society of Philadelphia in 1910. It was sold at auction by the GSP in 1997. While other Jeannette relics were said to have been found on Greenland (having drifted across the Arctic), it is unusual to have a relic with such distinguished and firm provenance.
with--A photocopy of a 6 June 1910 letter from Melville to the Geographical Society: "I am sending you herewith a small package of relics, that I brought from the "Jeannette" expedition, it consists of the money belt that I wore around my body, when making the search for the DeLong party, carrying the money to pay the expenses, also a sextant key, a teaspoon, a spectacle box, 2 pairs of dividers . . ."
