(THE LIVING THEATRE - Group of 15 flyers)

The Living Theatre.
Group of 15 lithograph, offset lithograph, letterpress and stencil flyers. Sizes vary. Circa 1950s-1960s.

Mostly anonymously designed, group includes work by Ray Johnson, Remy Charlip and Emma Silverman.

The Living Theatre was founded in 1947 by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. It became a home and a hub for experimental theatre and its legacy remains a powerful influence on the American drama scene; not just for experimental theatre, this underground institution would also hold benefits, screenings and musical events.

These flyers, a snapshot of New York City downtown cultural history in the late 1950s and early 1960s, include performances, readings and dances by John Cage, David Tudor, Taylor Mead, Yoko Ono and Dieter Roth among many others.
