Additional Details

Sheridan de Raismes Gibney (1903-1988) was a 1925 graduate of Amherst College who went on to a long career as an educator, playwright, and Oscar-winning screenwriter. 20 of the letters are from Columbia University literary critic John Erskine (1879-1951), offering friendly advice on Gibney's plays, poems, and studies, 1923-27. 4 of the letters are from Alexander Meiklejohn (1872-1964), president of Amherst College, who wrote from 1923 to 1928. Finally, a group of 16 later letters from various authors all relate to Gibney's efforts to have his plays produced, 1953 to 1960; among the correspondents are Lawrence Langner and Armina Marshall of the Theatre Guild, impresario Emile Littler, agent Harold Freedman, and more.
