Additional Details

An early performance of Thomas Dartmouth Rice's character "Jim Crow," introduced in 1832. Jim Crow was the key development in the spread of blackface minstrelsy in America. Here the character appears at the dramatic conclusion of a longer performance by Rice: "De general turn out in de Department, and De Wonder of Jim Crow." The following evening, it was promised that "the celebrated Jim Crow will appear" once again.
