Additional Details

"Aladin" was among Erté's most ambitious projects. He created more than 150 costumes and set designs for the 1929 production and experimented with different coloring and techniques to achieve a certain mood and atmosphere. He marked both of these designs "Ombres Chinoises" on the verso, indicating the shading he applied with burnished gold paint over a rich, fiery crimson background against which the fan dancers are silhouetted.
