Additional Details

An unusually early example of blackface minstrelsy performance, telling the story of the American Revolution through comic dialect. English actor Charles Matthews is credited as perhaps the first blackface performer in America, during a 1822-1823 tour. This dates from the following year, crediting the performance to a Mr. Roberts, and predates Thomas Rice's Jim Crow.

The illustration is an early work by celebrated cartoonist David Claypoole Johnston (1799-1865). One copy traced (Johns Hopkins) and none seen at auction.
