Additional Details

The playbill is headed "The United Ministrels will. give their Farewell. Performance by. Request. of the Ships Company." The printing was done by a Rio de Janeiro printer, which may explain the unusual typography. The program was standard minstrel-show fare for the 1850s, with performances of "Massa in the Cold Ground," "Darkies of the South," and Stephen Foster's "Louisiana Belle." Actors bore English names such as N.C. Morse and J. Beacham. We have not traced them as performers, but perhaps this was a traveling troupe which staged performances in various port cities for American seamen. None others traced.
