A British appearance by the American actor Thomas Dartmouth Rice and his character "Jim Crow," which was introduced in 1832. Jim Crow was the key development in the spread of blackface minstrelsy in America.

Rice's performance here was part of a benefit evening for the popular actress Mrs. Elizabeth Brunton Yates, a favorite of Charles Dickens.
