Additional Details

"Cabin in the Sky" was a revolutionary production which opened on Broadway on October 25, 1940 at The Martin Beck Theater starring an all-black cast including Ethel Waters, Todd Duncan, Rex Ingram, and Dooley Wilson. Billed as a "parable of Southern Negro Life with echoes of Ferenc Molnár's 'Liliom' (which would be turned into the musical 'Carousel') and Marc Connelly's 'The Green Pastures,'" the production ran for 20 weeks and was later turned into an Oscar nominated film adding Lena Horne, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, and Louis Armstrong to the cast. In 2003, The Martin Beck Theater was renamed The Al Hirschfeld Theater.
