"That Championship Season" Together, two set designs for the final scenes of the touring production, 1971. Watercolor, graphite, and wash on paper. Both measure approximately 175x330 mm; 7 1/4x13 inches, partially mounted to 20 1/2x18-inch sheet. Bottom image initialed and captioned "Finale" in lower margin; both titled and dated 1971 on verso. Framed. Provenance: Mielziner estate to Richard Stoddard, thence to current owner.

This popular and long-running play first opened off-Broadway at the Estelle Newman Theatre in early 1972 and then on Broadway from September 1972 through April of 1974 at the Booth Theater where it won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 1973 New York Drama Critics' Circle, Drama Desk, and Tony Award for Best Play. The New York Public Library Archives holds the majority of Mielziner's technical drawings and preliminaries for this production.
