Ira Aldridge (1807-1867) a Shakespearean actor who made his career on the London and European stage, is the only African American among 33 actors to have his name on a bronze plaque at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon. Born in New York, Aldridge attended the African Free School.
