The Montparnasse derailment occurred on October 22, 1895 when the Granville–Paris Express (which was apparently running late) overran the buffer stop at its Gare Montparnasse terminus. The train then crossed the station concourse and crashed through the wall, falling on its nose onto the Place de Rennes below. In the days that followed the accident, a number of photographers were attracted to the extraordinary scene.
