(TRAINS--PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD)
A binder assembled by the artist Lewis Smith with approximately 280 snapshots of steam locomotives.
In addition to creating his own drawings, Smith meticulously gathered and annotated photographs of the railway collected from railway workers. Included in this archive are shots of different train models produced mostly for the PRR between the 1900-40s. The photographs depict trains traveling through the Northeast and Midwest regions with steam rising high, conductors hanging out of windows, and at least one derailed from the tracks. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 2x4 inches (5.1x10.2 cm.), the sheets slightly larger, most with the train model, railroad company, location, and date, in pencil and ink, and some with a photographer's credit hand stamp, on verso. 1900-40s

Additional Details

Outsider artist Lewis Smith owned a lifetime railroad pass, and a large body of his work recorded his deep appreciation for life on the rails. The tracks as well as the buildings and sights near the stations inspired his colorful artwork and avid train memorabilia collection.
