Additional Details

Benjamin Lundy (1789-1839) was an early anti-slavery newspaper editor in Baltimore and Philadelphia who spent much of the 1820s and 1830s lecturing across the country. His interest in setting up a colony for freedmen brought him to Texas, Haiti, and Canada. Lundy's extensive journals of two trips to Texas (1833-35) appear on pages 32 to 186. The book's original owner apparently took a dim view of book thievery as well as slavery, writing "Steal not this book, my honest friend / for fear the gallows may be your end."
