Additional Details

These American Protestant missionaries worked among the Armenian diaspora in the Middle East. All eleven missionaries are named, along with their postings. Standing are Herman N. Barnum, Tillman C. Trowbridge, Ira F. Pettibone, Charles F. Morse, and William W. Merriam (who would be slain by brigands in 1862). Seated are Jackson G. Coffing, Jasper N. Ball, Sanford Richardson, Josiah Peabody, Julius Y. Leonard, and Crosby H. Wheeler. They were stationed variously in Bulgaria and various towns in Turkey: Constantinople, Yozgat, Arabkir, Kharput / Harpoot, Caesarea / Kayseri, and Tocat. Two of the men wear eyeglasses which were apparently added in the negative.
