Additional Details

In 1864, George W. Brown of Northport, Long Island shipped out as a hand on a steamer to China, inspired by a friend who had done the same a month before. Twenty years later he penned this lively account of his big adventure, with a particular focus on his life at sea, and on the wonders of Shanghai. San Francisco is discussed from pages 97 to 107; he described a Sunday morning earthquake on page 106. He encountered French troops in Maximilian's Acapulco on page 109. He returned home after six months, having circumnavigated the globe on a generally eastward route.
The front wrapper is illustrated with a vignette of a steamship, and is subcaptioned "A land lubber's experience on the briny deep--Scenes and incidents of the Orient, with a review of the customs, religion and personalities, of the strangest people of the world--Pen pictures of the Cape de Verde Islands, Capetown, Isle of France, Singapore, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Mexico and Central America--A greenhorn's view by land and sea in circumnavigating the globe." The printer is given as "Journal Steam Job Print"; the Suffolk County Journal was also printed in Northport during this period.
Not only do we find no record of this pamphlet on OCLC or at auction--we also find no record of the publisher E.S. Lewis, Jr. It appears to be completely unrecorded, quite an unusual find for a work of this size and significance.
