First edition in English of Volume I, second edition of Volume II. Chastellux was a French general who served under Rochambeau during the American Revolution. He travelled extensively through the young country from 1780 to 1782, most notably throughout Virginia, where he was a guest of Jefferson and visited the Natural Bridge (subject of the three plates).
