first edition in english. Chastellux was a French general who served under Rochambeau during the American Revolution. He travelled extensively through the young country from 1780 to 1782, most notably throughout Virginia, where he was a guest of Jefferson and visited the Natural Bridge (subject of the three plates). The present work includes recollections of the American Revolution, as well as his travels after the war.
