Dixon, who had accompanied Cook on the Third Voyage, undertook this expedition to establish a British presence in the region's fur trade, as well as to more accurately map and explore the Northwest coast and Nootka Sound. The expedition discovered Queen Charlotte Island in what is now British Columbia, and ventured as far as the southern part of Alaska. It also made stops in Hawaii, depicted in one view and 4 natural history plates. This narrative is comprised mostly of letters written by William Beresford.
