Additional Details

A memoir of an English-born gentleman's epic tour through the South undertaken in 1834 and 1835, with significant stops at White Sulphur Springs, WV; Nashville, TN; Louisville, KY; St. Louis, MO; Little Rock, AR; New Orleans, LA; and Columbia, SC. He writes critically and at length on two encounters with a slave trader who was bringing 300 slaves down to Natchez, MS (pages I:119-130 and 151-171) and describes a steamboat journey down the Mississippi (pages II:227-255). "One of the few important travelers of this period whose accounts were confined almost entirely to the South. . . . He was opposed to American democratic institutions and critical of the society and manners he encountered"--Clark, Old South III:40. Howes F68; Sabin 23960.
