Additional Details

First Amsterdam edition; first published in Paris in 1698. An account of a French privateering expedition under Jean-Baptiste de Gennes, written by a 19-year-old crew member. It describes a raid upon a British slave trading post in Gambia, a failed effort to pass through the Straits of Magellan, visits to Rio de Janeiro and Bahia in Brazil, Cayenne in French Guiana, and other stops. Natural history was a particular interest. "The part about Brazil is excellent. He describes Rio and Bahia vividly and gives a most remarkable commentary on the Jesuit convent in Bahia"--Borba de Moraes pages I:331-333. European Americana 699/82; Sabin 26002.
