Frederick Hubbard (1817-1895) of Utica, NY was a railroad engineer; his father was a railroad speculator who had represented New York in Congress. These exceptionally detailed letters were addressed variously to his parents or siblings. The first five were datelined from a Nile boat, at a wilderness encampment on the Sinai peninsula, Jerusalem, and Damascus; the others from England, France and at sea. Hubbard's journal of this same voyage was recently published as A Yankee Engineer Abroad, 1855-57. with--typed transcripts of each letter.
