Mrs. Elsie Nielson came to see the United States with her family. This volume was written in the form of letters back home to Glasgow; this is the copybook she retained after the original letters were sent. Her tour began in New York and included Philadelphia; Richmond, VA; Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; Asheville, NC; Hot Springs, AR; Washington, DC; Niagara Falls; Hamilton, Toronto, and Kingston in Canada; the Adirondack Mountains; and back to New York for her departure. A highlight was meeting President Benjamin Harrison at a public reception at the White House, who she described as "nothing remarkable, a short, gray-haired pleasant-looking gentleman" (Volume III, page 3); this remains the verdict of history. The diary is enlivened by two of her pencil sketches: of the Pulitzer Building in Manhattan (I:33) and a Richmond street car (I:64).
