McCants Stewar[t]. Feb. 13th, 1886. Thomas McCants Stewart, lawyer, minister, emigrationist and lecturer was born Charleston, South Carolina in 1853. His portrait and biographical sketch appear in William Simmons' encyclopedic biographical dictionary "Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive, Rising" (1887). Stewart and his family are the subject of a recent book, "African American Oddysey: The Stewarts, 1853-1963" (University Press of Kansas, 1998).
