(TRAVEL--AFONG, SCOWEN, BOURNE)
An album titled India with more than 160 photographs, primarily of India, but also including China and Egypt.
The album begins with 4 photographs from China credited to Lai Afong (Rows of flower boats and Pearl River, Canton; Street view of Canton; Junks in Guangzhou; and a Hong Kong view) and ends with 16 from Egypt credited to Sébah. The photographs of India are often credited to Charles T. Scowen or Samuel Bourne. The vast album includes architectural studies and landscapes as well as street scenes and portraits. Locations include Ceylon [Sri Lanka], the Rock of Trichinopoly, Madura, Jaipur, Bombay [Mumbai], the Tanjore Temple, Ootacamund, Hyderabad, Delhi, Lahor, Agra and the Taj Mahal, Darjeeling, and Benares [Varanasi]. The album features a number of portraits with captions detailing where the subjects live, including "Nautch Girls" (court dancers), "Coolies," "Bhutias - Darjeeling," Tamils, and much, much more. Albumen prints, the images mostly measuring 8 3/4x11 inches (22.2x27.9 cm.), and smaller, and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, most with captions in ink on the mount below the image. Oblong folio, 1/2 leather over cloth; the gilt-lettered title India on the front cover; the front cover detached and the binding slightly loose; with the owner's initials (presumably) on the front free endpaper in pencil. Circa 1890
