(TRAVEL--CARLETON WATKINS, WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON)
An album titled America with more than 100 photographs, including 4 credited to Carleton Watkins.
The album offers a cross-section of America from east to west, including New York City (7), Washington D.C. (5), Philadelphia (2), upstate New York (13, with locations such as Lake George, Hudson River, Palisades, and Ausable Chasm), the White Mountains (5), Colorado (9), views from the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad (7), Salt Lake City (2, including the Mormon Tabernacle), Yellowstone National Park (35), the Columbia River (3), and Portland (one). Many of the Colorado and Yellowstone are credited W.H. Jackson and a few others to C.R. Savage, including the two from Salt Lake City. And finally, there are 4 photographs by Carleton Watkins, all of Yosemite Valley, as well as at least 8 with the added I.W. Taber labels of scenes in Northern California, Monterey, and Yosemite Valley. Albumen prints, the images mostly measuring 10x13 inches (25.4x33 cm.), and smaller, and the reverse, mounted/recto verso, most with captions in ink on the mount below the image. Oblong folio, 1/2 leather over cloth; the gilt-lettered title America on the front cover; the backstrip detached and the binding slightly loose; with the owner's initials (presumably) on the front free endpaper in pencil. Circa 1890
The Watkins images (none of which have Taber's added credit) include: Grizzly Giant Diameter 33 Ft. Mariposa Grove * On the Road to Yosemite Falls, 1878-81 * Half Dome, Yosemite, 1865-66 * Mount Watkins and Mirror Lake, Yosemite, 1878-81
