first edition, second issue with battered type and no advertisements. With three forged signatures by Eugene Field II: "Eugene Field / Chicago. Sept. 14. 1895" and "Bret Harte" on title-page, and "S. L. Clemens (Mark Twain)" on the dedication page. BAL 3310. Between the 1920s and late 1930s, Eugene II, son of poet Eugene Field, was known to have forged the signatures of Lincoln, Rudyard Kipling, Theodore Roosevelt and Twain, as well as several others, profiting greatly from their sales. He was never formally charged for his illegal activities.
