(UNITED STATES.) Graham, Andrew B.; lithographer. Display printing of the Great Seal of the United States. Chromolithograph, cropped to a circle 20 inches across; minimal wear, laid down on early 20th century board. In an early 20th century gilt frame. Washington, DC, circa 1889-1909

Additional Details

This print closely follows the 1885 redesign of the Great Seal by James Horton Whitehouse, which has been in use ever since. The lithographer, Andrew Butler Graham (1852-1909), was a government draftsman until taking over the family lithography firm in 1889. The Library of Congress holds an alternate state of this print, with the signature below the border in the margin--the present copy has the printed signature within the border. This print would appear to be intended for use in a government office. The present copy was apparently cropped to its present form, laid down, and framed after 1922, when the framer Venable's Fine Arts moved to 1307 H Street, Washington.
