Additional Details

When launched in 1939, the twin-screw vessel was the largest passenger vessel ever built in the United States. Her maiden voyage in 1940 was to the West Indies rather than the usual trans-Atlantic crossing. Hostilities in Europe made such a voyage dicey. The ship was taken over by the Navy in 1941 and she served throughout the war as a troopship. She was reconditioned in 1946 and returned to passenger service. In 1964 she was sold to the Chandris Line and renamed "Australis." WITH-Group of over 35 pieces related to the "Australis," including brochures, photographs, deck plans, and shipboard ephemera. Additionally, there are several files of miscellaneous news and magazine clippings related to the "America."
