Additional Details

The twin-screw vessel began her life as part of the North German Lloyd fleet but was seized by the United States in 1917. She worked as a troopship and then briefly for the United States Mail Co. In 1921 she was acquired by the United States Lines and refitted for trans-Atlantic service. She was laid up in 1931, but was converted in 1940 to a troopship and renamed "Catlin." Her name was soon changed back to "George Washington." In 1951 she was destroyed by fire and was broken up soon after.
