Additional Details

The twin-screw ship was built specifically for the United States Lines, along with her sister ship "Washington." She began her maiden voyage in August 1932. She was commissioned by the U. S. Government during World War II as "Wakefield" and was severely damaged while in convoy in September 1942. She was rebuilt and in April 1944 was recommissioned. Rather than returning to regular trans-Atlantic service after the war, she was kept by the government.
