(UTAH.) "Utah Indian War Veteran" medal issued to a Mormon pioneer. Medal, 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 inches, reading "Utah Indian War Veteran" on obverse with Utah crest, and "Presented by the State of Utah to H.J. McCullough" on reverse, with pinback crossbar 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches reading "1850 1872" with Indian bust, connected by original red, white and blue ribbon, the whole 4 inches in length; minor wear. Only three states issued medals to those who served in the Indian wars: Minnesota, Nebraska, and Utah. These medals were authorized by the Utah legislature as part of a larger effort to secure 30 days of back pay for these veterans. They were first distributed at the annual ball of the Indian War Veterans in Salt Lake City held on 9 February 1906, with the remainder sent to out-of-town veterans soon afterward (Salt Lake Telegram, 10 February 1906). This one was issued to H.J. McCullough. Henry Judson McCullough (1842-1911) came to Nauvoo with his parents when only a year old, and went west to Utah with them in 1848. He filed a Utah Indian Wars pension request shortly before his death.
