Additional Details

Joseph Allen of Litchfield, CT died in 1755, but it took 8 years for the estate to be settled. This document is apparently a contemporary manuscript transcript of the official record of the estate distribution. Green Mountain Boy Ethan Allan is the first heir mentioned: "To Ethan Allen the eldest son of the sd decd two 9th parts of said estate, exclusive of the widows thirds, being two pieces of land . . . hereby set off to sd Ethan & makes his proportion of said estate." The two parcels totaling 46 acres are described. The inheritances of his brothers Ira and Heman Allen are also described. This modest estate settlement led Ethan Allen to look for other opportunities, which helped set him on the road to Vermont. See Shalhope, Bennington and the Green Mountain Boys, page 30. Provenance: sold by Edward Craig to the consignor, September 1977.
