Early notes on the conflict between the colonies of New York and New Hampshire over the land which later became Vermont. New Hampshire began granting land to settlers in this area in 1749, and New York began issuing overlapping grants soon afterward. These extracts from the New York council minutes trace the efforts to negotiate with New Hampshire's Governor Wentworth from 3 April 1750 to 18 October 1751. The two colonies agreed to exchange representations before submitting their cases to the King. However, more than a year went by without any further negotiations, noted by the secretary at the close of these notes: "There appears nothing in the minutes after this . . . I do not believe the representations were ever exchanged." The legal status of these lands grew ever murkier, soon bringing the Green Mountain Boys and the Republic of Vermont into existence.
