Statutes of the State of Vermont, Passed by the Legislature in February and March 1787. 171 pages. 4to, contemporary calf, minor wear; minor foxing; early owner's signatures on the front free endpaper (including Israel Smith), later bookplate on the front pastedown (Langdon Hardy Larwill). With 13 leaves of contemporary blue paper bound in at the rear, with a contemporary inscription on the first leaf "You are hereby commanded to summon." Winsor, 1787

Early compilation of the laws of Vermont during its Republic period prior to joining the United States. Includes a printing of the second Vermont Constitution. This copy belonging to Israel Smith (1759-1810), the first Congressman from Vermont, serving several terms in the House, as well as becoming a State Supreme Court Justice and Governor of Vermont.
