Additional Details

Thomas Hill Norwood (1842-1917) wrote this amusing letter as a University of Virginia student, complaining about his food, his Greek exercises, and being forced to demonstrate a math theorem in front of two visiting bishops. He concludes with a group of humorous self-portraits in his gymnastics uniform. During the war, Norwood served as a captain in the Confederate army, was wounded at Cold Harbor, and then ran a school in Richmond for many years.
