Fantasia's "Nutcracker Suite" segment was a masterpiece of effects animation. The name of Tchaikovsky's titular Sugar Plum Fairies from the stage ballet were changed to "Dewdrop Fairies," given dragonfly wings, and slim, delicate bodies, enlivening the foliage with their magical dewdrops. Animation director Les Clark patterned the fairies' flitting movements after hummingbird flight patterns and Disney's Ink and Paint Department created a special translucent paint that could adhere to the cels, adding an soft, ephemeral touch to the sequence.
