First state. As commander of the USS Constitution, Hull achieved one of the greatest naval victories of the war against the HMS Guerriere on 19 August 1812. A portrait by Gilbert Stuart soon followed, and in less than 6 months this engraving was on the market. It is embellished with a 3 1/2 x 9-inch vignette of the famous battle "from an original drawing under the direction of Capt'n Hull." Stauffer 1165:I.
