Barnum had just received two letters from Ohio, one from his brother and one from a friend, describing the depredations of the British and Indians among the civilian population. William Henry Harrison had arrived to offer temporary protection in Ohio. Meanwhile, across the lake in Ontario, "an insurrection broke out lately on the River Thames among the people, and the British sent the Indians to put the people down and restore order; and they tomahawked and scalped till they restored law and good government among the people!!"
