Additional Details

Samuel Follet (1792-1822) was a young Baltimore lawyer writing to his father with distressing news shortly before the Battle of Baltimore: "There is great confusion here. The British . . . have taken the city of Washington. . . . The capitol and the President's house were blown up immediately and the navy yard was in flames. . . . Baltimore trembles to its centre and awaits its doom."
