MacDonough's naval victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh drove the British out of Lake Champlain, earning him the gratitude of Albany to the south. This deed awards him a parcel on Washington Square for his "gallant conduct . . . in the signal victory achieved by him over a superior British squadron on Lake Champlain on the eleventh day of September last."
