Additional Details

A British depiction of HMS Shannon's June 1813 defeat of the USS Chesapeake, in which American captain James Lawrence ordered in vain, "Don't give up the ship!"

The legend explains that this is a print of an elaborate silver platter presented by the citizens of Suffolk, England to the Shannon's Captain Philip Broke, who nearly lost his life in the battle. The maritime iconography is decoded at length. Grolier Club, United States Navy, 1776 to 1815, 111; discussed and reproduced in Lossing, Pictorial Field Book of the War of 1812, pages II:709-710. 2 in OCLC (Library of Congress and Clements Library), and none traced at auction.
