Additional Details

This ballad commemorated an 1813 naval battle off the coast of Guyana, in which the American ship Hornet sank the British brig Peacock. Captain James Lawrence of the Hornet was mortally wounded just a few months later, memorably ordering his men "Don't give up the ship!" as the British prepared to board. Ford, Thomas Ballads 205; Shaw & Shoemaker 32449; only 2 other copies traced.
